Tools, limits and the numbers worth saving
Gambling is a form of entertainment you pay for. It is not a way to earn, to recover money already lost, or to fix a shortfall — and any site that suggests otherwise is selling you something. Everything on this page is free to use.
What every UK-licensed site has to give you
These aren't favours. Operators licensed by the Gambling Commission are required to provide them, and they're usually two taps away in account settings:
- Deposit limits — daily, weekly or monthly. Reductions take effect straight away; increases have a cooling-off period before they apply, which is deliberate.
- Loss and stake limits — offered by many sites in addition to deposit caps.
- Reality checks — an on-screen reminder at an interval you choose, showing how long you've been playing.
- Time-outs — a short break, typically from 24 hours up to six weeks, with the account locked for the duration.
- Self-exclusion — a longer block at that operator, from six months upwards, which can't be reversed early.
- Account closure — available at any time, for any reason, without having to explain yourself.
Two rules now built into online slots themselves are worth knowing: autoplay is banned, spins can't be faster than 2.5 seconds, and stakes are capped at £5 a spin — £2 for players aged 18 to 24.
GamStop covers everything at once
One registration with GamStop blocks you from every online gambling operator licensed in Great Britain: casinos, sportsbooks, bingo, the lot. Choose six months, one year or five years, and it can't be shortened once it's running. Registration takes a few minutes and needs the details you'd have used to open an account.
What it doesn't cover: betting shops and other premises, sites operating outside UK licensing, and lottery tickets from retailers. Many people pair GamStop with a gambling block through their bank and with blocking software such as Gamban on their phone and laptop, which closes most of the remaining gaps.
Signs worth taking seriously
Harm rarely announces itself. It usually shows up as a change in behaviour before it shows up in a balance:
- Playing longer or for more than you planned, repeatedly.
- Going back to win back what's gone — the single most reliable warning sign there is.
- Hiding how much or how often you play from people close to you.
- Gambling to manage stress, boredom, loneliness or low mood.
- Money that was meant for something else finding its way into an account.
- Feeling restless or irritable when you try to cut back.
One of these on its own isn't a diagnosis. Several of them together is worth a conversation with someone who does this professionally, and the helpline below exists precisely for that call.
Habits that help
- Decide the amount before you open the app, and treat it like the cost of a night out — spent whatever happens.
- Set the deposit limit while you're calm, not mid-session.
- Keep a clock visible. Slot lobbies are designed without one for a reason.
- Never top up to chase a loss. The maths doesn't change because you're behind.
- Take real breaks — the time-out tool exists for exactly this.
- Talk about it. Secrecy is what lets a problem grow quietly.
If someone else's gambling is affecting you
Support isn't only for the person playing. GamCare runs a dedicated service for friends and family, GamAnon offers peer support groups, and the National Gambling Helpline takes calls from anyone affected — not just the gambler. You don't need permission to ask for help on your own behalf.
